The 15 best exercises to work your abs
Back to the gym: 5 tips for a fresh start!
It’s been a while since your last workout? Here’s the good news: it’s never too late to jump back in. Maybe life got busy, your routine slipped or you found other ways to stay active. Whatever the reason, what matters is that you’re ready to give it another go.
After a few weeks (or months) off, it’s totally normal to feel a little rusty. Don’t worry, though. Give your body a moment to adjust and it will bounce back quickly.
So here are 5 tips to help you ease back into your workouts… with a smile!
Take it easy at first
It’s easy to want to make up for lost time when you come back to the gym. But pacing yourself is the best way to keep your motivation going.
Don’t book 6 or 7 sessions in your first week back. Start with 2 or 3, then build up gradually as your energy and recovery allow.
This will give your body time to settle back into a rhythm, and you’ll lower your chances of sore muscles… or losing steam altogether.
The goal is not perfection. It’s staying consistent enough to make going to the gym a habit you enjoy again.
Adjust your weights
During your first few visits back, you might notice that the weights you used to lift now feel a bit heavier. That’s totally normal.
Be willing to scale back a bit and focus on your form. Your strength will come back faster than you think, especially if you train regularly.
Don’t forget that our free training programs are there to help you ease back in gradually and get back on track.
New goals, zero pressure
If it’s been weeks or months since your last workout, now’s a good time to set some new goals for yourself.
Ask yourself what matters most to you right now:
- Getting your energy back
- Getting into a routine
- Building strength
- Reducing stress
Simply carving out time for yourself
Your goal doesn’t need to be dramatic to be worthwhile. Every workout is a win for your body and your mind.
Remember: there’s no such thing as the “right body” for coming back to the gym. You only need the desire to start looking after your physical and mental health again.
Listen to your body
Have you been injured since your last visit? Do you feel a nagging pain every time you move? Don’t brush it off.
Check in with a healthcare professional, if needed, before jumping back into certain exercises. Then, adjust your workout to suit your current abilities.
Modifying an exercise or dialing back its intensity isn’t a step backward. It’s often the best way to keep progressing without interruption.
What’s important is that you keep moving safely.
Don’t forget to have fun
The best workout program is the one you’ll actually want to do again. Pick exercises you genuinely enjoy (you’ll find plenty of ideas on our blog and social media), try a new machine, switch up your sessions, or spend a few minutes unwinding in the Recovery Platinum Zone after your workout if your membership gives you access.
The more you associate the gym with a positive experience, the easier it’ll be to build a routine that lasts.
And remember: you don’t need to do a lot to get started again. You just need to take that first step.
