Your home - especially your kitchen - is where eating habits begin. Your immediate environment is essential to supporting your choices and helping you eat better. How can you achieve this? By making these 10 simple and easy changes to eat better!

📝 PLAN YOUR GROCERY LIST!
Take the time to plan what you need for the week! This will definitely save you time at the grocery store and it will also help you avoid impulse purchases. Plus, you'll avoid going over budget and it will help reduce food waste. It's a pretty simple concept, but to make your list most effectively, you need to have your meals and snacks planned out for the week.

📅 PLAN YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK!
Planning your meals will help you improve your diet by reducing the temptation of restaurant visits. When you're short on time and have nothing planned, it's all too easy to order a meal online, eat processed convenience foods, or eat out.

At the beginning of the week, take a moment to map out all your meals for the week as well as your snacks. Remember to include your loved ones in the process and ask them for feedback on the menu or their preferences and suggestions!

🥑 EAT A VARIETY OF UNPROCESSED FOODS!
Unprocessed foods will force you to cook which is a good way to eat a varied diet that’s low in sodium and saturated fat! Choose seasonal foods because they are often less expensive and have a better environmental footprint. Some foods can even take you out of your comfort zone and, in the process, introduce you to new recipes.

The idea is not to restrict ourselves or cut out any types of food. The goal is simply to reduce processed foods in order to find balance. Also, when buying this type of food, try to choose smaller sizes.

🧈 VARY YOUR DIET!
Make sure you always have the essentials in your refrigerator and pantry like milk, butter, flour, eggs, but also remember to try new products to add some variety to your diet. Even if you already have your favourite recipes, many substitutions can still be made, such as cutting the fat out of a recipe and replacing it with applesauce!

ORGANIZE YOUR FRIDGE!
Organize your refrigerator so that the most accessible foods are fruits and vegetables. In addition to being healthier choices, they are perishable and need to be cooked or eaten more quickly than other foods. Also, to avoid food waste, make sure recently purchased food is placed in the bottom of the refrigerator to allow for proper FIFO (first in, first out) turnover. This will prevent you from having to throw away items that would not otherwise be visible. Finally, make a snack basket for quick access to the best snacks!

🍎 PLACE A FRUIT TRAY OUTSIDE THE REFRIGERATOR!
When you are looking for a snack to quash a craving, the foods most visible in your environment will usually guide your choice. So having a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter or dining room table can positively influence your choice! It's good, healthy, useful, and elegant!

🥗 REDUCE FOOD WASTE!

Knowing how to reuse the previous day's leftovers is an important asset for better eating. With a little creativity in the kitchen, you can use a common base to prepare multiple meals. The cook once, eat twice trend is gaining ground!

🍽 EAT AT THE TABLE!
Don't eat at your desk or on the living room couch. Try to get together with friends and family at mealtime, as the social aspect is important to consolidating your eating habits. You'll also eat more slowly, giving you more time to listen to your satiety signals.

🥕 GROW AND HARVEST YOUR OWN FOOD!
If time and space allow, creating a small garden is a simple and fun way to improve your food environment. There's nothing more rewarding than enjoying the vegetables you've grown yourself. This will motivate you to cook them in a variety of ways and to discover new cooking techniques. If you only have a smaller space like a balcony, plant herbs!

It's an opportunity to reconnect with food and not see meals as a chore, but rather a time to enjoy! These small changes seem simple to implement, but they will make a big difference in eating better!
